How Do ChatGPT and Perplexity Find Your Business?
GEO explained in plain language: where AI answer engines get their information, and what your site needs so they find and recommend you specifically.

GEO (generative engine optimization) means shaping your site's content so it's clear and structured enough for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI to find it, understand what the business does, and quote it in an answer. It isn't the same as traditional SEO, even though many of the basics overlap.
More and more customers ask an AI model for a recommendation instead of scrolling through search results themselves. If a business doesn't show up in those answers, it doesn't necessarily mean the site is bad, often it just means the AI can't find or understand clearly enough what the site actually offers.
Where does AI actually get its information?
Some systems, like Perplexity and ChatGPT's search mode, fetch information live from the web the same way a search engine does: they read the page's content the moment the question comes in. Others rely on training data gathered earlier, which doesn't update continuously. Either way, the common thread is that clear, consistent content on the site raises the odds of being found and understood correctly.
What does the page need to say right away?
AI doesn't guess. It needs to be able to read, clearly, what the business does, for whom, where, and how to get in touch. If that information is scattered across the site in different wording on different pages, the AI has to infer it instead of quoting it directly, and inference makes mistakes, or a business getting left out entirely, much more likely.
Why does structured data (schema.org) help?
Schema.org markup is information added to a page's code that states directly what the page is, which business is behind it, what services it offers, and how to reach it. AI can read that directly instead of trying to infer the same things from prose. It doesn't guarantee a mention, but it makes being found considerably more reliable.
How does a whole site support one business?
AI values consistency more than volume. If the homepage, the service page, and the Google Business Profile all tell the same story in the same words, it's easier for the AI to treat that as confirmed fact. If the details conflict, different prices or different service areas listed in different places, the AI either leaves the business out or repeats outdated information.
- state what you do, for whom, and where, in the same words on every page
- add schema.org markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage)
- keep your Google Business Profile aligned with your website
- use clear headings that directly answer common questions
- drop vague marketing language that doesn't say anything concrete
AI isn't searching for the best wording, it's searching for the clearest truth.
Summary: clarity before tricks
GEO isn't a list of tricks, it's the result of a site telling the truth about the business clearly and consistently. Once that foundation is solid, structured data and technical polish do the rest of the work. Start by reading your own homepage as if you knew nothing about the business, and check whether it directly answers a customer's question.
